Upper Mustang Trekking

Surrounded in mystery and unparalleled in natural and cultural beauty the most, aweinspiring of Nepal's 75 districts is the district of Mustang. Upper Mustang is part of the tibetan plateau, and is high, dry and beautiful. It lies to the north west of the Kali Gandaki, beyond Kagbeni, which is as far west as you can go on the jomsom trek. It is only possible to enter Mustang with an organised group and permits. As it is divided into two parts, upper mustang falls under the rain shadow, virtually untouched by the summer monsoon rains so characteristic of South Asia.

The Teechi (often pronounced "Teeji" or "Tiji") festival is an annual event indigenous to Lo-Manthang of Upper Mustang. The name Teechi/Teeji/Tiji is an abbreviation of the word "Tempa Chirin" which means "Prayer for World Peace". This festival commemorates the victory of Lord Buddha's incarnation "Dorjee Sonnu" over a demon called Man Tam Ru a vicious creature feeding on human beings and causing storms and droughts. Teechi/Teeji/Tiji festival is celebrated for 3 days. Dances performed by the monks of Lo Manthang's "Choedhe" monastery during the celebration display.

Followings are 3 days of Tiji Celebration in Upper Mustang of Nepal:

a) The harassment of Ma Tam Ru Ta (in a dance called "Tsa Chham" on the first day).

b) The birth of Dorjee Sonnu as the demon's son (on the second day called "Nga Chham").

c) The attempt to return the demon to lord Buddha's realm (on the third and final day).

The trail goes through the Kagbeni river gorge. The Kali Gandaki river, considered sacred by Hindus, is full of black pebbles called 'Saligram', which is valued by Hindus and Buddhist in Nepal. The river supposedly, flow through gold mines which are proven by the fact that often particles of the gold can be found in Kali Gandaki river sand. The trek passes through sacred Gompas (Monasteries) and a village called Tangbe situated at 2930 Meter altitude. Another village on the way is Chhusang which still has remains of an old castle built during silk trade period.

Day 06: Trek Chusang - Samar (3620 m) 4 hrs. Overnights at Guest House.

Having entered this long and secluded valley one feels also a distinct change, not only to topography but there is a world of difference in culture, lifestyle and landscape. Settlements are more scattered, smaller and basic. The people of Lo or Mustang practice agriculture but because of the lack of the rain and fertile soil, cultivation is in sheltered plots of land making the landscape of a pattern of brown with scattered patches of shaded greens. A little ahead of Chusang we cross a small bridge across the Mustang Khola River, across which is colorful little village called Chaili. The trail then veers northwest along steep lines right up to the village of Samar, out campsite, making it a tough four hours walk. Samar is a very old and small village situated amongst a grove of trees with a stream running through the middle.

Day 07: Samar-Gelling (3570 m) 5 hrs. Overnight at Guest House.

As in all desert lands, settlements in Mustang are in oasis village most houses are constructed out of mud and stones with roof cast out of twins, straw and a mixture of mud and pebbles. The trail descends crossing couple of mountain streams followed by a fairly flat stretch of two hours before we arrive into a wide valley. The Gelling village is located an hour walk away to the right of the main trail and in a valley between two hills. North of the village lies a Buddhist Gompa, which, though new contains exquisite wall paintings.

Day 08: Trek Gelling - Charang (3560 m) 5 hrs. Overnight at Guest House.

The days walk is through perhaps the driest part of Mustang. Much of one's energy is spent negotiating loose dry soil that give way every times you walk uphill, making it seem tiresome infertile at times. However, the magnificent views of the countryside the gentle contours of the north in contrast to the rugged mountain canyons in the east and west are the source in inspiration to walk on. A total walk of five good hours brings us to Charang, a large spread out village inhabited totally by the people of Lo who are of Tibetan origin. The old monastery and the adjoining Gompa are said to be some 500 years old and contain some of the finest religious wall paintings in the world.

Day 09: Trek Charang - Lo Manthang (3840 m) 4 hrs. Overnight at Guest House.

We spend part of this morning exploring this interesting village and its large old monastery. We then go a bit out of the way to see Dhakmar, a small-secluded village. Today's walk is only for 4 hrs. But mostly uphill and then the trail flattens out till Lo Manthang, then capital of Mustang consisting of over two hundred houses. The entire village is walled and painted earth brown and white.
