| The regular Nepali meal is dal (lentil soup), bhat (boiled rice) and tarkari (curried vegetables), often accompanied by achar (pickle). Curried meat is very popular, but is saved for special occasions, as it is relatively more expensive. Acquired from Tibetans, momos (steamed or fried dumplings) deserve a mention as one of the most popular snack among Nepalese. Rotis(flat bread) and dhedo (boiled flour) also make meals in some homes. Most Nepalese do not use cutlery but eat with their right hand. Some popular local food and drink are: Beer: The locally produced beer is quite good, especially after a hard day's walking or bicycling around the valley. Beer is some times found in the hills as well, carried there by porters especially for thirsty trekkers, but is unlikely to be very cold. There are a number of locally produced brands. Buff: Water buffalo, casually abbreviated in buff, is the usual substitute for beef since cows are not eaten. Curd: Yoghurt is known throughout the subcontinent as curd and the buffalo milk curd of Nepal can be very good. Gundruk: It is a dried vegetable that are used in the traditional Nepalese soup. Gurr: Potatoes are the staple food of the Sherpas and although they are a relatively recent introduction, potatohave come to assume the same importance in the Solu Khumbu as they do in Ireland . Gurr is made from raw potatoes ground and mixed with spices and then grilled like a large pancake and eaten with cheese. Lassi: Refreshing drink of curd mixed with water. It will give you relief from all your tiredness. Momo or Kothe: Typical Tibetan dish made by steaming or frying meat or vegetables wrapped in dough, very much like dim sum or ravioli. Sikarni: A sweet curd dessert that may include nuts and dried fruits. Tama: Traditional Nepalese soup made from dried bamboo shoots. Thukpa: It is a traditional Tibetan meat soup. Tsampa: Ground grain mixed with tee, water or milk and eaten dries either instead of rice or mixed with it, the staple dish in the hill country. Besides these all the international dishes are available in Kathmandu as per international standard.
